10 years of mutual support: HERANA and University World News

In the year that CHET's HERANA project has drawn to a close after 10 years of research and advocacy on higher education in Africa, University World News (UWN) celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its Africa Edition.

HERANA was instrumental in the establishment of the UWN Africa Edition in March 2008, and has provided ongoing support to the online newspaper as it established its role in improving the communication and understanding of African higher education to African and global audiences.

In return, UWN provided to HERANA an invaluable channel to the more than 30,000 registered readers of its fortnightly newsletter – compared to 56,000 readers of UWN’s Global Edition newsletter.

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary, UWN has published a series of articles that reflect on the state of higher education in Africa and on UWN's unique contribution to higher education journalism. Three of these articles were penned by members of the CHET board:

  1. UWN -- Tracking the key issues in higher education by Teboho Moja
  2. What do the next 10 years hold for higher education by Goolam Mohamedbhai
  3. HERANA -- 10 years of growing research universities by Nico Cloete and Francois van Schalkwyk

Other notable contributions to anniversary issue include:

  1. A life-time of University World News by Karen MacGregor and
  2. A slew of accolades from leading higher education organisations, institutions and experts across Africa.
  3. Bringing ‘development’ into the decolonisation debate by Mark Paterson in which he reports on Nico Cloete's presentation at a public dialogue – “Decolonisation or Development? The Role of Higher Education in South Africa” – hosted by the Centre for Conflict Resolution in Cape Town (March 2018).
